about

Mandragora is a delirium of free jazz, electronica, rock, funk and free improvisation conjured by the band Pandaemonium in the late 1990s.

Pandaemonium was led by saxophonist Tim Hill and featured some of the finest English free jazz and improvising musicians then and now, including John Edwards, Steve Noble, Pat Thomas and Alex Ward and the great tenor player Geoff Hawkins. The band played in London and the South East, often performing their Sun Ra tribute, ‘Lost in the Stars’, and also toured with a more brass based circus piece, The Carnival of Souls.

Mandragora features their last line up, a 5/6 piece playing original pieces by Tim Hill drawing on his background in 80’s post punk, No Wave and dub as well as free jazz and improvised music. This version of the band played some gigs in London and at the Rising Sun Arts Centre in Reading. This band was driven by the fantastic rhythm section of Edwards and Noble with an emphasis on strong grooves, Pat Thomas's wild electronics and Alex Wards searing guitar.

The album was recorded in 2001 at Moat studios in Brixton and Wired studios in Reading. The album also includes Sun Ra’s Astroblack and some shorter improvisations.
