about

Hammergags and Hyperbreaths is an album of solo baritone improvisations ranging from a few longer ramblings together with rants, fragments, short sighs and whispers.
I have always been captivated by the sound of the saxophone, of human breath brought alive by reed then resonated by brass into sculpted sound shaped by diaphragm and throat and tongue.
Since the age of 18 I have been enthralled to the sound of certain saxophonists, as they conjure, roar, enchant and bewilder unlike any other sound makers. It was the firstly the humanity of their sound that captivated me, the cry of Ornette Colemans alto, then the astonishing apocalyptic roar of Albert Alyer, Dolphy’s exuberant tumult of leaps, mangled bop and arabesques, Ben Websters sounding breath. Then it was the extra-ordinary soundworlds the saxophone could conjure, the sheer grain and attack of Evan Parker’s tenor, the sonic affront of Peter Brotzmann, John Zorn’s percussive exuberance and mayhem, Marshall Allen’s squalls and John Butchers soundscapes. These players led me to a love of free improvisation, an approach to making music offering a unique aliveness, sound making so immediate you feel its throughout your body, alive to every twist and turn. But also utterly daft.
I have also always been captivated by power of bass lines and guitar riffs, I love melody too
The pieces explore some of the possibilities these many influences have brought me to and a few of the possibilities that vast tube the baritone saxophone offers. The baritone is a beast, a clown, and a cave and a world and a sculpted reed in the wind.
I play with texture, shape, rhythm and attack, with scraps of melody and riffs, with what my body and the sax can do together. There is the odd hint of jazz and much that has been half digested from Evan Parker, John Butcher, Alan Wilkinson et al
I am no virtuoso, the saxophone is a humbling beast but it is a beast I love spending time with
I am playing a twenty- year old Yanagasawa Bronze baritone sax and a Theo Wanne Durga mouthpiece
