.
Tongues of Fire blow up a musical storm of brass, reeds and percussion, playing in the landscape, parades, concert and club stages and in the street. Tim Hill is a musician and artist often working and creating outdoor music, celebrations and shows, playing a wide variety of music from folk to improvised noise. He also researches histories of outdoor ritual and celebration and traditions of street music and outdoor noise. Tim has played with samba bands around Stonehenge and on the back of trucks at Notting Hill carnival, led giants through the streets of London, created Olympic Torch events, cooked celebratory feasts, written wassail songs, and led funeral services. With the Mellstock Band he recreates the English rural music of the 18th and 19th centuries, appearing in many TV and film productions including the classic BBC Pride and Prejudice.

We have many rich traditions of outdoor music in England. Often these lie outside of the common boundaries of what is regarded as folk music. These traditions range through drummers to village bands, ritual noise to carolling, city Waits to processional music, carnival bands to pipers, buskers to militia ensembles. Outdoor music is often functional, for dancing, parades, celebrations and special occasions. Noise too has several functions including exorcism, protest and celebration. We use sound and music to define ourselves and our communities and fight battles over the noise we make and ‘Instruments of Joy’ seeks to understand the roles and reasons for outdoor music and sound making.
