The street band Tongues of Fire blow up a musical storm of brass, reeds and percussion, drawing on traditions of circus, chapel and village bands, street music and the cosmic carnival of Sun Ra.
Their new album is a compilation of pieces recorded over the last 10 years and features original music by band leader Tim Hill from the upbeat to the wild to the evocative. Alongside these are covers of Sun Ra, NIno Rota, Jimi Hendrix and New Orleans marching band grooves, some concert band pieces featuring bass player Dominic Lash and and includes the lovely English funeral Hymn Egypt which goes on a rhythmic journey. The result is a sound that is both very English and International.

Tongues of Fire make a ‘joyful noise’ for dreaming, dancing and celebration, driven by the awesome rhythm section of Dan Fox and Steve Noble. They play in the landscape and in the street, on concert and club stages, at festivals and in village halls. They often create music for outdoor shows and events working with companies like Galway based Macnas, Rag and Bone, Cirque Bijou and Pa Boom
They are currently recording new material for release later in the year
Their noisy activities are rooted in Tim’s explorations of celebratory and ritual sound and the social role of outdoor music
